Peru’s Iconic Dish in the High Andes

On the second day of the Salkantay Trek, travelers will learn to prepare one of Peru’s most iconic dishes: Lomo Saltado.

This traditional dish is cooked at an altitude of approximately 4,635 meters above sea level, making it a truly unique culinary experience, impossible to find on conventional trekking routes.

Cooking Lomo Saltado in the heart of the Andes is not just about preparing food, but about sharing culture, tradition, and stories in one of the world’s most breathtaking natural settings.

What do the Cooking Classes during the Salkantay Trek consist of?

Cooking classes during the Salkantay Trek are held at our mountain camps, where each high-altitude chef specializes in preparing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners adapted to the high-altitude conditions. Our chefs, who are trekking specialists and organized by the tour operator, actively involve travelers in preparing traditional Peruvian dishes, using Andean ingredients adapted to altitudes above 4,600 meters. Travelers not only observe but also participate directly in the culinary process, learning traditional techniques and the cultural significance of each dish.

A Day of Trekking and Cooking at Wayracmachay Camp.

This experience begins after one of the most challenging days of the 5-day Salkantay Trek. We wake up very early and welcome the day with a comforting coca infusion, ideal for aiding the acclimatization process.

After enjoying a nutritious breakfast prepared by our high-altitude chef, we begin the hike to Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek. Upon reaching the summit, travelers can admire the majesty of the Salkantay snow-capped mountain, considered sacred in the Andean worldview, and share a symbolic moment of respect and connection with nature.

After the descent, we arrive at Wayracmachay Camp, where the Andean cooking class takes place. Here, the chef gives a culinary demonstration, and travelers actively participate in preparing their own lunch under his guidance.

This moment becomes a perfect reward after the physical exertion and one of the most special memories of the trip.

  • A unique experience.
  • Cultural interaction.
  • Ideal for food culture lovers.
